The NBA’s all time leading scorer underwent a quadruple coronary bypass surgery at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Thursday the same day as his 68th birthday, according to hospital officials.
“Abdul Jabbar would like to thank his surgical team and the medical staff at UCLA, his alma mater, for the excellent care he has received,” said a statement from the hospital. “He is looking forward to getting back to his normal activities soon.”
The towering 7 foot 2 center,
known for his signature running sky hook, asked fans to keep him in their thoughts and “most importantly, cherish and live each day to the fullest.”
A native New Yorker, Abdul Jabbar was born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. and went to the all boys Catholic school Power Memorial Academy before attending UCLA .
