The cook off features chili prepared by local restaurants and organizations as they compete for the titles of Best Meat/Overall Chili, Best Vegetarian, and People’s Choice Chili. In addition to chili, there are otherchili related food items. More than 40 groups will be serving chili.”People in this region simply love the varieties of chili and allof the special activitiesincluded during this annual recognition of this spicy stew,” said event organizer Scott Rougeau, special events associate for the Downtown Ithaca Alliance.”With that in mind, we’verecruited a group of restaurants that will showcase some of the very best and mostcreative chili and chili related recipes around. The public is truly going to enjoy what’s instore for them this year.”The Chili Cook Off will feature a farmers market with vendors and local wineries, breweries and farmers sampling their goods. director of events for the Downtown Ithaca Alliance. “We will have a chili competition to judge who the favorites are, a family fun zone for kids, a beard and mustache competition for those with great facial hair and the Silent Disco that was very successful and we’ve now brought back.”Returning as a participant for the best vegetarian chili is Moosewood Restaurant, which won first place in the category last year.”It’s always interesting participating. Being the most famous vegetarian restaurant in town, it’s always interesting seeing other restaurants making vegetarian chili. Who’s going to take us down?” said Jenny Wang, manager of Moosewood Restaurant, lightheartedly.So far, the restaurant hasn’t decided on what it will make for the cook off.”We haven’t pinpointed the ingredients we will use,” Wang said. “We haven’t decided if we will make a chili we have made in the past or if we will take a risk by trying something new.”WE ARE ITHACA: Portrait project celebrates Ithaca diversity and identitySome of the other participants include Bandwagon Brewpub, New Roots Charter School and Greenstar.The Tompkins Trust Company Family Fun Zone inside Center Ithaca will have free activities throughout the day.Tickets for the Chili Cook Off are available staring Feb. 1 at the Downtown Ithaca Visitors Center, locatedat 171 E.
