ONCE it was the supermodels who refused to get out of bed for less than $10,000.
But now a new breed of Hollywood women hold the purse strings and the power on the world’s most glittering red carpets.
As preparations for this year’s Oscars get under way, celebrity stylists are travelling first class, earning thousands a day and having the world’s biggest designers at their beck and call.
The gowns these women pick for their A list clients at next month’s Academy Awards help shape not only the stars’ futures but that of the designer and stylist herself.
Stylist and Sunday Mail columnist Lindsay Campbell says super stylists are here to stay and their attention to detail has all but stopped fashion faux pas at big events.
She added: “For a red carpet event, they deal with the designers, pick the accessories and shoes and choose a back up dress, just in case someone is wearing a similar gown.
“These women know what their clients like and dislike and what suits their body shape. That’s what a really good stylist does.
“Big stars don’t have the time to decide what to wear on a red carpet or for a week long press junket. They need help.
“Stylists such as Elizabeth Stewart and Leslie Fremar do an incredible job. Their clients regularly make best dressed lists, the designers are thrilled they are wearing their pieces and everyone is happy.”
No stylist has a bigger job this year than Los Angeles based Elizabeth Stewart who is dressing three Academy Award nominees on March 3 Best Actress hopefuls Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock and Supporting Actress Julia Roberts.
Stylists are now emerging as some of the biggest players in the movie business.
They might work on a freelance basis but can command huge fees, usually paid by the star or movie studio.
Some stars, such as Julianne Moore, are happy for their stylist to talk about their relationship. Her expert fashion finder Leslie Fremar regularly appears alongside the actress at events and in magazine spreads.
And a stylist’s influence can extend further than just fashion.
Madonna’s stylist Shavawn Gordon was the one who picked up the star’s adopted son David in Africa.
And Rachel Zoe, perhaps the most famous of all celebrity stylists, used to party with her clients Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and Nicky Hilton.
Here Lindsay gives her verdict on four of Hollywood’s super stylists.
