Good afternoon, COL McSally. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us and answering our questions. Thank you for your service to our country. I have 2 questions:
If elected, will you introduce legislation to repeal or lessen regulations imposed upon our Second Amendment rights by Federal agencies in direct contradiction to Federal law?
In your opinion, is Fast and Furious a plot to demonize the Second Amendment or a legitimate operation?
by Bob 2/28/2012 7:00:15 PM
Thanks Bob for your questions and your kind words. It has been a privilege to serve and defend our country in uniform. I am a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment. I pledged an oath as an officer to support and defend the Constitution and I have shown that I take that oath seriously, even when doing so endangered my career. I would do the same upon taking a similar oath as a member of Congress. Fast and furious by any measure was a disaster that has cost the lives of many individuals including BP agent Brian Terry. Regardless of the motives, this kind of operation should have never happened.

Thanks D. Gale for your interest in the important goal of reducing our nation’s debt, which is a critical factor impacting our economy, national security, and freedom. I support many elements of the Ryan budget proposal, but we have to make sure that our promises to our seniors and at risk populations are kept. I applaud Ryan for his initiative and effort to not just talk about what needs to be done, but put an alternative plan together. That’s what we need more of in Washington, and that is what I intend to bring.

John, thanks. At every event I have had the chance to speak so far, I have shared that the most pressing issues affecting this community are the overwhelming national debt, the stagnated economy, and our unsecured border as a national security threat. The best way to improve the local economy is to get the federal government off the backs of our small business owners. That means reducing onerous regulations, federal mandates, and freeing up individuals to innovate and create jobs, which is what Americans do best. Thanks for your excitement and hope to see you out there to talk some more.

Debra, no need to call me ma’am anymore, since I am applying for a job to work for you. Success in Afghanistan is in our national interest. We learned in the 90s that leaving ungoverned spaces to be used by those who want to harm us can have devastating consequences. is leading a coalition of dozens of nations in attempts to partner with Afghanistan to stabilize the country and have them provide for their own security. We need to have conditioned based (vs time based) turn over of responsibility to Afghan security forces. On Iran, we cannot permit them to acquire a nuclear weapon. We’ve wasted the last three years dealing with them out of weakness vs strength and the window is closing. We must support our Allies in the region and consider all options to maintain stability and security there.

Dbro, thanks for being open minded. We need to get away from polarization and demonizing across the political spectrum and work together to address the very serious challenges in front of us. I have 27.5 years of tested experience in and out of uniform. As a Commander of a combat squadron, I had to build a team to get the mission done, and this is a similar challenge. I will be here to represent all the people in this district, and have demonstrated the leadership, experience, and moral courage to get things done. We might disagree from time to time on issues, but I hope I can earn your trust to serve you and this community.

Chris, call me Martha. Our porous borders are a national security threat that impacts this community more than any other in the nation. We need to have the political will to secure the border with available technology. I have been in leadership positions for critical security operations all over the world and believe we need to execute intelligence driven operations to thwart the transnational criminal organizations. We also need to work with our partners in Mexico to address the root causes of this serious threat. On immigration, we must enforce the laws we have. However, we also need to reform the legal immigration process to help disincentivize illegal entry into our country and streamline the process for hard working people who want to achieve the American dream.

Mark, are you single? I think I am in love 🙂 Thanks so much for your willingness to support my campaign. In my 2 1/2 week political career, I have discovered that even if you are the right person with the right qualifications to soar to victory, you need fuel in your engines which is where you and others come in. I promise to be a good steward of your investment and provide a better return than you are getting on Wall Street these days.

Don, I totally agree with you about the negative attacks. Enough is enough. Check out the core values on my website. I wrote those in response to the political environment. Jesse Kelly is a great American who chose to serve his country honorably. I had many good men (and women) like Jesse under my command and I know the military couldn’t succeed without them. I believe I am the best choice based on my proven leadership, tested moral courage, and the 27.5 years of education and experience at the national and international level. Congress, I most recently was teaching senior government officials from all over the world on democracy, capitalism, and international security. Washington is a battle ground, and I have the ability to command, lead, and succeed in that environment.

Tom, the pressing need of reining in our debt means all federal spending should be considered to gain efficiencies and savings. Our military is the best in the world thanks to the great people who step up to serve and the American people providing the best equipment and training. We have doubled our defense budget since 2001, and the decreased operations tempo in Iraq and Afghanistan will allow us to recoup some of those costs. But we need to replace equipment, and ensure we are ready to face the threats of the future like cyber terror in addition to conventional and unconventional threats.

Dan, yes I have climbed many mountains including Kilimanjaro and Mt. Blanc, and love hiking here at home. Mt Wrightson is my favorite mountain in town. I also own land in Elgin, so the Rosemont Mine is close to home. I believe we need to best use of our natural resources to meet global demand and create jobs in our community, but we have to do it in an responsible and intelligent fashion. I have a meetings set up to discuss the issue with all sides, so I can come to an informed and analyzed opinion. My general philosophy is that this and other decisions like this should be made at the local level to the max extent possible without uninformed interference from Washington.

Jake, there are at least 4 debates scheduled starting with a forum at Saddlebrook on March 14th. I really look forward to the opportunity to engage with the other candidates on substance of the issues we are facing as a community and a nation. We need to get past sound bites and into sound solutions. I understand Kelly has withdrawn from several of these opportunities, and I am disappointed that we won’t have the chance to engage in meaningful dialogue unless he chooses to participate. Check the AZ Daily Star on Sundays for the weekly political events calendar.
