adidas hoodies sale King runs a PB in the adidas Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League NYC meet
Michael Rodriguez King, a 10 year old West Brighton resident and Island Express Track Club star, was excited about qualifying for the adidas Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League NYC meet youth mile run two weeks ago at Icahn Stadium, Randall’s Island.
Saturday, Rodriguez King showed out again on the magic blue track, finishing fifth in the 11 12 year old mile with personal best of 5 minutes, 4.31 seconds. In the Grand Prix qualifying meet, he was also fifth, posting a 5:07.41.
Jonah Gorevic of Rye, NY, easily won the four lap contest in an 11 year old age group world record time of 4:51.85. Gorevic set the 10 year old standard last year in the same race, stopping the clock in 5:01.55.
“That was my goal today, to beat Jonah’s world record,” said Rodriguez King, who was making his debut appearance.
The 4 foot 10, 78 pounder was all business from the gun in the 13 man field, negotiating his positions with poise like a veteran runner.
He traveled in eight, fifth and sixth places, respectively, for three laps. However, coming off the final turn he was within striking distance to move into fifth place.
“I felt strong and quick,” Rodriguez King said. “I wanted to finish in the top five.”
The Sacred Heart School fifth grader never slowed down on the homestretch, then shifting gears in the final 50 meters to overtake Azaan Dawson of New Haven Age Group Track Club. Dawson finished sixth in 5:05.27.
